Isolette (9-24-2011)

Chris and Mason had to spend the first few weeks of their life living in a controlled environment called an isolette. Like the words hints towards, they are isolated. We could only touch them by putting our hands through the holes on the sides.

My wife said it reminded her of the movie, Dumbo, where the mother could only touch Dumbo through the bars of her cage. We talked often about how the scene was so much more emotional for us now that we could really identify with Dumbo's mom. Maybe an odd connection, but it made us sad every time we thought about it.

Here is a rough drawing I did of Chris' isolette while in the NICU.

  1. It's amazing how far medicine has come in the past couple of decades, as far as how doctors can help and protect premature babies. I was just reading an article in The New Yorker about how, up until recently, all they could do for premies was swaddling and extra oxygen. I hope you're holding them every chance you get now.
